11-12-09 Veterans Remembered
Each Veterans Day our small rural county (population 10,000 in the entire county) has a short Veterans Day celebration on the court house lawn. The entire lawn is decorated with flags that belong to our past service men and women who have passed away. It's the most beautiful that the square looks all year... even more beautiful than Christmas. The families allow the local Legion to display the flags, and they do it well. My husband's grandfather's flag, and his great-grandfather's flag were displayed among the hundreds on the lawn today.
A few years ago, our county raised money to build this memorial on the lawn. It reads, "DEDICATED TO THOSE MEN AND WOMEN WHO SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES FOR THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND IN SPECIAL MEMORY OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES" I thought that the reflection of the flag in the memorial was especially beautiful.
